About Dylan

Mayor of Garland. Licensed civil engineer. Garland neighbor.

Dylan Hedrick became Garland's 38th mayor in June 2025 after winning a runoff election. Before that, he served three terms representing District 7 on the City Council, including a year as Mayor Pro Tem and service as chair of the Council's Development Services Committee.

By profession, Dylan is a licensed professional civil engineer. He is Director of Civil Engineering for the North Texas region at DIG Engineers, where his work centers on K-12 school projects and land development. He holds a bachelor's degree and an MBA from Rice University.

That background shapes how he works as mayor: start with the numbers, explain them plainly, and build the plan around what the city can actually afford. Since July 2023 he has written plain-language summaries of City Council meetings on his Substack, so residents can see what's coming before the vote.

Dylan and his wife, Katie, are raising their family in Garland.

This term

  • A lower city tax rate. Voters approved Proposition A on November 3, 2026, lowering the city tax rate while funding more police, firefighters and 911 dispatchers.
  • H-E-B and Joe V's Smart Shop. A full H-E-B near Firewheel in north Garland and a Joe V's Smart Shop at Centerville Road and LBJ Freeway in south Garland.
  • Plans for the long run. Garland on the Rise, the 2026–2036 Strategic Plan, adopted in June 2026, and the Garland Forward 2050 Comprehensive Plan draft now before the Council.

Why I'm running again

Garland's biggest challenge isn't effort. It's math. We collect far less revenue per resident than our neighbors, even with an above-average tax rate, because our tax base leans so heavily on homeowners.

This term, we started changing that: new grocery stores that residents asked for, a lower city tax rate that still funds public safety, and a plan that ties every budget decision to growth. Those are real results, and there is more to do. I'm asking for a second term to finish the work.
